Regulators in Kansas start hearings this week on a move by Evergy to boost residential electric rates by nearly 15%.
The Kansas Corporation Commission will hold public hearings on the proposal of adding another $13.05 a month to an average residential customer’s bill. But the commission’s own staff is opposed to Evergy’s rate increase for its 735,000 customers mostly in the eastern third of Kansas and recommends a lower amount.
The company’s total request is $196.4 million at a time when Kansas energy rates are still higher than Oklahoma and three other surrounding states. According to PowerOutage.com.,the Kansas average as of June 2025 per kilowatt of electricity is $14.30 while Oklahoma’s average is $12.31 and the average in Nebraska is lower at $11.82. Missouri has an average of $12.93 while ratepayers in Colorado pay $15.20 per kilowatt.
