Excel Energy under fire for attempts to join SPP

Consumer groups in Colorado are criticizing a plan by Xcel Energy to join the Southwest Power Pool contending the benefits are minimal and the price tag too high.

The Colorado Sun reports the criticism has been voiced during hearings by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission. Critics complained about the $30 million in upfront costs to join Markets+ which Southwest Power Pool, or SPP runs. Executives with the utility contend it is the best economic and operational choice. Excel Energy is attempting to meet a 2021 Colorado law requiring utilities with transmission lines to join a wholesale electric market by 2030.
