Anti-wind feelings run high in one county

Secretary of State Chuck Gray speaks to a crown of more than 100 people Wednesday,May 21, 2025, at the Niobrara County Fairgrounds in Lusk. Most there indicated by raising their hands that they are against a pair of large wind projects proposed for the area.

The growing movement against further expansion of wind generation projects in Oklahoma can be an emotional argument—sometimes, pitting friend against friend, neighbor against neighbor and leading to bitter arguments.

But this movement isn’t just in Oklahoma. Take for instance the state of Wyoming where projects that will eventually spread over more than 180,000 acres in two counties in the eastern part of the state have created the same situation for friends and neighbors.

The Cowboy State Daily reports this week how the wind farm projects “divided this community pretty bad” according to one former county commissioner who added, “People that used to be friends are no longer friends.”
