Kansas regulators heard arguments in controversial natural gas plants

Kansas Corporation Commissioner Andrew French said Wednesday the commission will reach a decision in Evergy's request to build two new natural gas plants by July 7

Kansas Corporation Commissioners say they hope to have a decision by early July on a controversial proposal under a new state law that is similar to one opposed by Oklahoma Corporation Commissioners.

Under the year-old Kansas law, utility company Evergy wants authority to construct two new natural gas plants, but it faced opposition from consumer groups who contend it will lead to much higher rates for consumers. The law that Evergy is using to take advantage of is opposed by Oklahoma Corporation Commissioners who came out last week against legislative bills proposing its creation in Oklahoma. The bills, pushed by Rep. Trey Caldwell, R-Faxon, proposed endorsement of natural gas to power electric generating plants in Oklahoma.

The debate before the Kansas Corporation Commission came during three days of testimony last week in which consumers raised challenges to increasing costs of natural gas.
