Feds stop $64 million for high speed rail project in Texas

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says the proposed high-speed rail some want to build connecting Dallas with Houston is a “waste of taxpayer funds.”

In saying so, he also yanked the strings on a $63.9 million federal grant and rescinded it. In the 12 years since the Texas Central Railway project was unveiled, not a single track of rail has been  laid. The original estimated cost was $10 billion as promoters said it would shuttle passengers from Dallas to Houston in 90 minutes instead of a four-hour car ride.

Originally estimated to cost $10 billion, the project would be able to shuttle passengers between the state’s two largest cities in 90 minutes (versus nearly four hours in a car). But since it was unveiled in 2013, the estimated cost has risen to $20 billion.
