The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is already at work as the first major winter storm of 2025 hits the state.
In an announcement Thursday morning, ODOT said its crews were plowing and treating slick highways and bridges in Southwestern and Southcentral Oklahoma as a winter storm moves into the state. Oklahoma Turnpike Authority crews are plowing and treating the H.E. Bailey Turnpike in Cotton, Comanche and Caddo counties. Drivers should be alert to rapidly changing conditions.
All crews statewide, including the Oklahoma City and Tulsa area metros are on standby while monitoring the weather system and will respond as necessary.
Drivers should slow down and allow plenty of time if traveling. Elevated surfaces freeze first, use caution on bridges and overpasses. Check real time road conditions at okroads.org or download the free Drive Oklahoma app.
REMEMBERÂ during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:
- Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment and do not pass; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
- Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
- Be aware of “black ice,” which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
- Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
