ONG echoes national reports of natural gas savings this winter

Oklahoma Natural Gas is making sure its Oklahoma customers were aware of recent predictions that natural gas users across most of the U.S. should see lower bills this winter.

In a Monday release, ONG cited a Department of Energy report that natural gas will save Oklahomans up to $700 in heating costs.

In its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook report, the U.S. Department of Energy says natural gas will be the most affordable energy option for heating a home this winter, saving Oklahomans between $500 and $700 over other sources.

The Department of Energy report aligns with findings from the American Gas Association, showing that natural gas saves households over $1,100 annually on cooking, heating and clothes drying. Considering that 3 of 4 Oklahoma households use natural gas, Oklahomans stand to save significantly by preparing meals, heating homes and doing laundry with natural gas.

Oklahoma Natural Gas customers have been paying less for natural gas for almost two years. Provided the state sees normal winter weather, customers can anticipate a drop in their bills of about 3% compared to last winter.

“Our teams take pride in providing customers with a reliable, affordable energy choice,” said David Williams, vice president of Operations for Oklahoma Natural Gas. “Lower energy costs mean families have more money to meet their everyday needs, which is especially important around the holidays.”

There are steps customers can take to reduce energy use and control winter bills further:

  • Keep oven doors closed when cooking. Use oven lights to check on food.
  • Set your water heater’s temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Apply weatherstripping and caulk to seal gaps and cracks around doors and windows.
  • Change or clean air filters, which can lower energy consumption by 5% to 15%.
  • Install foam gaskets on electrical switches and outlets, which can account for up to 10% of your home’s energy loss.
  • Change the rotation of ceiling fans to a clockwise rotation to push warm air downward.

Oklahoma Natural Gas provides natural gas service to over 918,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Oklahoma. It is considered the largest natural gas distributor in the state in terms of customers.
