Governor fires Energy Secretary over Illinois River pollution case

Ken McQueen was fired by Gov. Kevin Stitt as Oklahoma's secretary of energy and environment on Dec. 3, 2024.

Politics can be a rough and tumble business—just ask Ken McQueen who was sacked this week as Oklahoma Secretary of Energy and Environment.

He was fired by Gov. Stitt after the governor learned Tuesday that McQueen had joined Attorney General Gentner Drummond in appearing at a Tulsa federal court hearing in the nearly two-decade lawsuit filed over pollution of the Illinois River. The suit was filed by former Attorney General Drew Edmondson against the poultry-industry for causing the pollution of the scenic river.

Gov. Stitt replaced McQueen with corporate lawyer Jeff Starling, reported The Oklahoman, then issued a statement on social media.

““I’m disappointed that Ken McQueen would join AG Drummond, former AG Drew Edmondson and environmentalists in opposition to Oklahoma farmers and landowners by appearing at a court hearing today in his capacity as Secretary,” Stitt said on the social media platform X. “This nearly two-decade-old case is a radical left attempt at backdoor regulation through litigation. I’ve fired him from his position as Secretary of Energy and Environment and Director of the Department of Energy effective immediately.”
