The State Supreme Court ruling we first told you about last week where the court overturned a 2022 order waiving the collection of franchise fees by utilities could result in higher utility bills for consumers.
At least that’s what Paul Monies of Oklahoma Watch reported as he explored the decision that came out of a challenge by Oklahoma City and the Oklahoma Municipal League. And if it happens, it would mean higher bills linked to the 2021 winter storm Uri.
Commission Chair Kim David responded to the ruling with a statement this week.
“The Corporation Commission decided this case prior to me being elected. I am evaluating the Court’s Opinion to ensure compliance and next steps. To protect ratepayers and guarantee that no one receives an unfair windfall, it may be appropriate for the Legislature to clarify that the winter storm securitized debt is not subject to taxes and fees. The Legislature created this securitization mechanism and is the sole body who can make this clarification.”
