Largest container ship handled at Port of Houston

With the support of the Houston Pilots, the 11,356 TEU CMA CGM Cassiopeia arrived at Port Houston's Bayport Container Terminal on September 24. Over two days, 7,327 moves were completed—nearly 31 moves per hour. This significant milestone is expected to lead to 15,000 TEU vessel calls at Port Houston later this year. (Photo: Business Wire)

The Port of Houston recently handled its largest vessel ever to date—a 11,356 TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) ship named the Cassiopeia.

It took two days for 7,327 moves to be completed or about 31 per hour.

The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority has an ongoing Houston Ship Channel Expansion called Project 11. Hydraulic dredging in part of it is expected to be finished in November to help provide a widened ship channel through Galveston Bay to the Bayport Ship Channel.
