Groups want PFAS banned from fracking in New Mexico

Advocacy groups in New Mexico want Gov. Michelle Lujan-Grisham to ban “forever” chemicals from the fracking process in the state.

They recently delivered a petition to the governor requesting such a ban on the use of PFAS chemicals in oil and gas extraction. Oklahoma energy companies with exploration operations in the Permian Basin section of the state could be affected if such a ban were to be adopted.

Dr. Robert Bernstein, New Mexico chapter president of Physicians for Social Responsibility, said that while advocates do not know if PFAS chemicals are currently being used in oil and gas operations in the state, there is nothing currently in place to prevent the use, according to the New Mexico Political Report.
