Fort Sill apparently was not affected by a recent cyberattack on American Water, the largest water utility in the U.S. and one that services water distribution at the Army post and 17 other military installations across the country.
The New Jersey-based company confirmed this week in a a security statement on its website that it had learned of “unauthorized activity in our computer networks and systems” last Thursday, which it determined “to be the result of a cybersecurity incident.”
In a reply to an inquiry by reporter Mike Ray of the Southwest Ledger, Don Herrick, Director of Public Affairs at Fort Sill stated, “We are not aware of any water or sewer service disruptions at Fort Sill as a result of this incident.”
He confirmed Fort Sill is one of the 18 military installations serviced by American Water which he described as “the privatized utility owner responsible for managing both the water and wastewater distribution systems on the post.”
CNBC reported the company had shut down its customer service portal, and as a result, its billing function “until further notice” and will not charge any late fees or other fees related to billing as long as the system is down.
