First freeze of the fall hit northern Oklahoma

Yup, there was definitely frost on the pumpkins in some parts of Oklahoma Wednesday morning.

While gardeners raced to cover their remaining tomato and pepper plants, temperatures dropped to the 20s in the northern counties. It was cold enough to make oil rig workers and cowhands bundle up with a layer of warmer clothing.

Oklahoma Climatologist Gary McManus at the Oklahoma Mesoet reported the lowest temperature was in Seiling.

“As you can see, we’ve had our first freeze of the season and in true Oklahoma fashion, the fun is in overdoing it, no? Seiling wins the prize for lowest low at 24 degrees, the coldest reading on the Mesonet since March 28.”

But he also handed out other cold weather prizes.

“Buffalo and Jay win the duration below freezing at 6 hours apiece, but Buffalo is STILL below freezing, so it’ll add to that number,” he wrote early Wednesday morning.

McManus said the “hard freeze folks,” those with low recordings of 28 degrees were confined to northern Oklahoma.
