NextEra Energy, the firm known for wind farms, such as those it built in Oklahoma, is venturing into development of a renewable energy project right next to the government’s nuclear waste storage site in southern New Mexico.
The U.S. Energy Department announced it teamed with NextEra Energy Resources to develop nearly 3 square miles surrounding the country’s only underground repository for nuclear waste located 26 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico. It was described as the government’s effort to transform parts of government-owned property once used as the nation’s nuclear weapons program into prime real estate, reported the Associated Press.
The site is next to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and is part of a more than 50-square mile area where the government hopes to develop into use for solar arrays and battery storage systems.
