Colorado mineral rights holders lose court fight over increased natural gas taxes

Mineral rights owners in southwestern Colorado have lost again in court in their fight against paying $500,000 in taxes on a natural gas pipeline operated by Kinder Morgan.

The owners, who formed a group called CO2 Committee, Inc., challenged increased taxes and lost their original lawsuit before the Colorado Supreme Court. The increase in taxes came after a southwest Colorado County raised its valuation by $57 million of the pipeline that carries carbon to Texas. Kinder Morgan  appealed the $2 million tax hike and the Colorado Supreme Court upheld the retroactive valuation.

When Kinder Morgan passed along the increase to the landowners, it sparked yet another lawsuit reported Colorado Politics.
