Oklahoma state House Democratic leader Cyndi Munson didn’t get a response from Gov. Kevin Stitt this week when she asked him to call a special session of the legislature to impeach Corporation Commissioner Todd Hiett.
Her call came after revelations of accusations that Hiett, a Republican, was drunk at a national convention in June and tried to grope a man at a hotel bar. Munson issued a second call Friday to the Governor.
“After hearing from hundreds of Oklahomans across the state following my statement on Wednesday, it is clear that the people have lost faith in Commissioner Hiett’s ability to execute the duties of his office,” Leader Munson said. “We deserve public servants who will put the state first.
“Oklahoma’s Constitution makes it clear: it is the House of Representatives, not OMES, that should lead an investigation and prosecute any findings before the State Senate.
“I am once again asking the Governor to issue the call for Special Session and let us begin this work to seek justice and put this situation behind us.
“Oklahomans deserve answers and action.”
After Leader Munson’s call, Commissioner Todd Hiett insisted he will not step down from his position. Commissioner Kim David has called for an independent investigation. Commissioner Bob Anthony called for Hiett’s resignation.
It’s believed the victim in the incident was an attorney who represents a utility and makes appearances before the Corporation Commission. Some believe it would appear to be a conflict of interest for Hiett to conduct any hearings regarding the reported utility in question.
