Why Texas leads the nation in electric power outages

Electric trucks line up to provide support with major power outages after Hurricane Beryl in Houston, on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.

Some experts at the Energy Department have carefully reviewed the number of electrical power outages in every state and what they found isn’t good news for the state of Texas.

The analysis revealed Texas had more weather-related outages than any other state between 2000 and 2023. Furthermore, the experts blamed the record on the Texas electrical grid, suggesting it’s not fully prepared to handle severe weather, such as the 2021 Winter Storm Yuri.

The Texas Tribune reported if the grid is to be improved to reduce the weather power outages, it will cost money. And the improvements will likely mean higher utility rates.
