Arkansas AG orders Chinese company to divest state farmland

While some members of Oklahoma’s congressional delegation are outspoken against ownership of American land by the Chinese government, the Attorney General in Arkansas has taken it a step further.

AG Tim Griffin has ordered a company owned by the Chinese government to divest nearly 160 acres of land near Jonesboro in the northeast part of the state. According to Arkansas Business, the land is owned by Northrup King Seed Co., a corn and soybean seed provider and also a subsidiary of Syngenta Seeds LL, which is owned by China National Chemical Company, a state-owned enterprise.

Attorney General Griffin is using a new state law that bans prohibited foreign companies from owning Arkansas agricultural lands. Griffin sent a letter to the companies, demanding they divest within two years or face legal action.
