Oklahoma tribe takes steps to protect rivers from oil and gas projects

PONCA

Oklahoma’s Ponca Nation recently took steps to protect two rivers in its territory from fossil fuel projects.

The tribe adopted laws recognizing the natural rights of the Arkansas River and the Salt Fork River.

The Enid News and Eagle reported the early July action was taken by the Ponca Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma Business Committee, a move in which a new statute recognized the “immutable Rivers of Rivers.”
