Ogallala Aquifer dropped 12+ inches in 2021

An old water well stands next to a center pivot irrigation system in a Morton County field. This southwest corner of Kansas has been experiencing extreme drought since last fall.

A recent study found that the Ogallala Aquifer, the underground source of water that runs through the Oklahoma Panhandle dropped more than a foot in 2021.

The impact was especially felt in western Kansas according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.
