Gas line explosion investigated in Kansas

Large natural gas pipeline explosion in Ellsworth County

Northern Natural Gas is investigating a series of gas incidents in the past several days in central Kansas including a gas explosion near Ellsworth.

Earlier in the week, the company dealt with a gas leak near the Rice County town of Lyons, just south of the gas explosion.

The blast happened on one of multiple gas lines that run from Texas to the upper Midwest reported the Wichita Eagle.

“This was an isolated incident. We shut off the section of pipe that was impacted and we don’t expect any issues said JoAnna DeWald, a spokeswoman for Northern Natural.

The Eagle quoted Ellsworth County emergency manager Keith Haberer who said the explosion was at a site about 15 miles north of the city of Ellsworth in a pasture and the flames shot about 300 feet in the air.

No injuries were reported. The earlier leak occurred in a storage well which ruptured while maintenance was underway.
