Ethanol industry suffers from waivers given to small refineries

Hard feelings still exist in the biofuel industry against the oil and gas industry over the U.S. trade war with China and the shutdown of 13 ethanol plants since November 2018.

Corn growers blame the decline in the biofuel industry on the Trump administration’s expansion of waivers to exempt smaller oil refineries from blending ethanol into gasoline. Shutdowns occurred in Nebraska, Iowa, Texas and other states.

The Renewable Fuels Association, the nation’s biggest biofuel producer group, estimates that – in addition to the difficulties being faced by corn farmers, plant shutdowns have cost about 2,300 jobs, according to a report by Reuters.
