NW Oklahoma site of latest earthquake

Keeping track of the latest small earthquakes, the U.S. Geological Survey reported a 2.5 magnitude event early Thursday morning in northern Oklahoma.

It occurred at 1:37 a.m. southwest of Enid near the small town of Ames. The recorders confirmed the quake was about 2 miles southeast of Ames and at a depth of approximately 3 miles.

The quake is in the region initially targeted by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission beginning in January of 2016.  At that time, 27 wastewater disposal wells located around Fairview were part of a plan to change operations and lower their volumes. The area, as announced measured 36 miles by 20 miles and the Commission wanted to see an 18 percent reduction in the amount of wastewater pumped back into the earth.

The USGS also recorded a stronger earthquake late Wednesday night in New Mexico. It measured 3.4 magnitude with an epicenter nearly 10 miles from the town of Bingham which is about 70 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
