Southern Kansas was shaken early Wednesday morning by a 3.5 magnitude earthquake that was followed by one in Oklahoma.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter was around the small town of Runnymede or about 42 miles southwest of Wichita.
The quake rumbled at 2:36 a-m and was the latest in a series of small quakes that have struck the region. The Kansas Corporation Commission has targeted wastewater injection wells in the area in the past few years.
Nearly two hours later, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake shook northern Oklahoma in the same area where it hit on Tuesday. The quake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey had an epicenter only about 2 miles west of the small town of Chester. It was there that a 3.0 magnitude quake was registered on Tuesday. Chester is on the southeast side of Major County.
Major county has seen its share of earthquakes in the past several years and wastewater injection wells there have also been targeted by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.
