Tulsa Teen Vying for $250,000 First Prize in National Science Fair

A 17-year old high school student in Tulsa is one of 40 students nationwide competing for a $250,000 first prize in an annual science and math contest sponsored by the Society for Science and the Public.

Beau Taylor Bingham, a student at Cascia Hall Preparatory School is taking part in the Regeneron Science Talent Search. The young man was motivated by a family friend’s life and death struggle with the “super-bug” MRSA. He evaluated algal extracts for their potential to treat the antibiotic-resistant bacteria that is often associated with lengthy hospital stays.

The contest is considered the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. The students will gather late this week and next to display their science research and compete for more than $1.8 million in top awards. The top prize is $250,000 while the second place finalists receives $175,000. Third place carries a $150,000 award.
