Big Increases in Oklahoma and US Oil and Gas Rig Counts

Both Oklahoma and the U.S. saw big jumps in rig counts in the past week according to figures released by Baker Hughes.

Oklahoma’s count jumped by 7 to reach 118. A year ago, the state had only 63 working oil and gas rigs.

Nationally, the count grew by 20, reaching 809 active rigs. The jump includes 21 more oil rigs to reach a count of 652. The national count added two gas rigs, making a total of 155 rigs drilling for gas. The U.S. count is up 345 from one year ago including 280 more oil rigs and 63 gas rigs.

Canada’s count dropped by 91 in the past week, falling to 184.

Oklahoma’s Woodfords plays reached 11 working rigs, same as a week ago. The Granite Wash added one to hit 13. The Mississippian grew by one to hit 7 working rigs.

The Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico remains the nation’s biggest oil and gas play with 315 active rigs, an increase of seven in the past week. A year ago, there were 147 rigs in the Permian Basin. The Eagle Ford in south Texas grew by 2 to reach 72.

Of the active oil and gas states, Kansas added two to reach 38, according to the Red Top Rig Report. Texas added 8 to hit 404. North Dakota is up one at 43. New Mexico’s count grew by three to reach 48. Louisiana’s count is 53, two less than a week ago. Colorado remained at 30.
