Senate showdown over Nord Stream 2 pipeline

Germany Suspends Nord Stream 2 Certification - The Moscow Times

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is headed for an apparent showdown with Democrats this week to force the Biden administration to do something about Russia’s Nordstream II pipeline.

Cruze has clamored for a vote and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer of New York agreed to hold one this week on legislation to put sanctions on the pipeline that will carry gas from Moscow to Germany.

Oklahoma U.S. Sens. Jim Inhofe and James Lankford were among other Senators who last year sent a letter to President Biden criticizing him for failing to follow the law and impose sanctions on entities involved in the pipeline. The letter was sent while construction of the line was still underway.

The failure of the administration to identify and impose new sanctions signals its willingness to allow President Putin to gain a stranglehold over Europe’s gas supplies and increase its geopolitical leverage. We call on the administration to correct its misguided actions by quickly and fully implementing the sanctions mandated by US law,” wrote the senators.
