Experts suspect wastewater disposal wells are behind earthquakes in central Kansas

This is one of the several seismometers the Kansas Geological Survey monitors in the state. Rick Miller, a senior scientist at KGS, said the network of seismometers in the state allows for any earthquake 1.8 magnitude or higher to be detected by the survey.

Oil and gas drilling operations—namely the disposal of wastewater through disposal wells are being blamed for an increase in earthquakes around Salina, Kansas, the city that sits squarely in the middle of the state along Interstate 70.

Earthquakes have been on the increase over the past few months. The Salina Journal reported the county had 138 quakes 2.0 magnitude or higher between mid-August and the end of December 2021.
