Extreme high fire dangers exist in western Oklahoma

The lack of rain and dry conditions combined with the expected return of strong winds on Friday make for a high fire danger across western Oklahoma.

The region hasn’t received any rainfall in more than a month and Oklahoma Climatologist Gary McManus, writing in his daily weather update on Thursday said an approaching cold front will bring drier air and kick up strong SW winds gusting to more than 45 mph.

It’s not just western Oklahoma where there is concern over the high fire danger.

” And this is gonna be one of those fire days in Oklahoma where any fire that gets started will get quickly out of hand,” said McManus.
“Those types of conditions have led us to 82% of the state in some level of drought, with nearly 29% of that being severe-to-extreme drought,” he added.
