Why were historic State Capital tanks removed?

Our story this week about the removal of oil storage tanks that had been in place for 79 years at the Oklahoma State Capital prompted a question from some readers.

They wanted to know why the 3 tanks were removed, courtesy of the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board with the assistance of Phillips 66 Company.

The question was put to a spokeswoman for OERB.

The response?

“It was not an active site, just an artifact/showpiece. They did need to be repainted so, yes, mostly cosmetic.”
