Colorado energy firm faces $1 million to $3 million in fines

Denver based K.P. Kauffman Co. faces a possible $1.2 million in fines from the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission for violation of several oil and gas rules. The fines could grow as the Commission resumes a hearing this week into the alleged violations.

The Denver Post reported the alleged violations included failure to report spills and not revealing cleanup plans. At least 8 allegations were made against the company.

The newspaper indicated there is the possibility that if the COGCC determines there was a pattern of violations, K.P. Kauffman could lose its license to operate in Colorado.

Commission staff had originally recommended $3.7 million in fines but commissioners reduced some of the penalties and dismissed other complaints.

The company operates nearly 1,200 wells in Colorado and most are in Weld County.
