OU part of worldwide climate change webinar effort

Climate change will be the focus of the U.S. and nearly 50 countries next week as they hold webinars available to the public. The University of Oklahoma will host a free webinar next week where panelists will present specific and feasible steps Oklahomans can take to mitigate climate change.

Set for 4 to 6 p.m. on April 7, the Oklahoma Climate Dialog webinar is part of the international Solve Climate by 2030 effort organized by the Center for Environmental Policy at Bard College.

Throughout early April, universities in 49 states and U.S. territories and nearly 50 countries around the world will host similar webinars specific to their regions. In total, speakers at 125 different webinars will propose methods to mitigate climate change in their communities.

The Oklahoma Climate Dialog is moderated by Lynn Soreghan, director of the School of Geosciences at OU’s Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy.

The webinar’s four speakers are:

  • Lindsey Peaver, J.D., attorney with A New Energy, LLC, OU alumna
  • Sharina Perry, founder and inventor, Utopia Plastix™
  • Dirk Spiers, CEO Spiers New Technology
  • Edith Wilson, founder and owner, Rock Whisperer LLC

“Addressing the climate crisis can seem overwhelming, but hope is a motivating force. We need a host of approaches to address the issue — regional climate actions tailored for differences in geography, population density and so forth. By hosting conversations at the local to regional levels, we hope to demonstrate that foundational change is not only possible but also equitable.” said Soreghan.

Soreghan emphasized that although the Oklahoma Climate Dialog is hosted at OU, it is open to all Oklahomans throughout the state.

The Oklahoma Climate Dialog will feature a Q&A for attendees with the panelists.

Organizers will make a recording available for teachers who wish to show the webinar to their students and host climate dialogs in their classrooms. In addition, as part of the #MakeClimateAClass initiative, organizers of Solve Climate by 2030 have created one-day lesson plans for a variety of K-12 and college courses so that teachers can integrate a discussion on climate into their subject.
