Enverus reports increase in rig numbers

The US rig count rose by one in the last week to 509 as of April 14, according to Enverus Rig Analytics. The count is up 5% in the last month but down 7% YOY.

Both the Anadarko Basin and the DJ Basin have seen rig counts recover to year-ago levels at 30 and 11 rigs, respectively. And the Gulf Coast Basin is actually up 53% YOY, or 24 rigs, at 69, but is still below pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels of more than 90 rigs.

The Permian is still down 24% YOY at 211 rigs and the Williston Basin is down 61% at 13 rigs. It seems hard to believe that there were more than 50 rigs running in the Williston at the start of 2020, but after falling to a low of nine in May, the play has averaged 12 rigs over the last three quarters.

Gas plays were the most resilient to the pandemic, with the Appalachian rig count down by just three rigs YOY at the current 44 and the Ark-La-Tex region, which includes the Haynesville, up by 17 rigs, or 47%, on the year at 53.
