13 U.S. refineries exceeded emissions limits for cancer-causing benzene in 2020

Phillips 66 refineries in Louisiana and HollyFrontier operations in New Mexico were among 13 U.S. oil refineries that reportedly released the cancer-causing chemical benzene in concentrations beyond federal limits last year according to a report by the green group Environmental Integrity Project.

The EIP said its study was based on the second full year of data reported by U.S. refineries since the EPA started requiring continuous monitoring of air pollutants around plants in 2015.
