Frozen wind turbines studied at Iowa State University

Preventing wind turbines from freezing in frigid weather like the winter storm that hit Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas last month isn’t as easy as it sounds. It’s not a simple solution of putting electrical heaters on the blades.

One Iowa State University scientist who has been studying ways to prevent the icing on wind turbine blades, thus avoiding power shutdowns like the one that happened in Oklahoma in February says it takes a keen understanding of physics.

Hui Hu, Professor of Aerospace Engineering, Iowa State University wrote about the complex issue in The Conversation, a nonprofit news site.
