Oklahoma’s aircraft manufacturing industry hit with layoffs

More layoffs have hit the aero manufacturing industry in Oklahoma.

Bethany-based Meta Special Aerospace informed the Oklahoma Office of Workforce Development it would make a mass layoff on Feb. 12 but no figures were ever announced.

A company spokeswoman informed the office that the company had been notified of the termination of a significant government contract.

“This mass layoff is expected to be permanent,” wrote the company spokeswoman.

In Tulsa, Spirit AeroSystems informed the state of planned layoffs of 100 hourly workers “due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The company said the layoffs were necessary because Boeing recently announced a reduction in the number of 787 jetliners it will produce and Spirit is a large supplier for the aircraft.

Another 115 of Spirit’s employees are being moved to other programs at the Tulsa facility.
