Lucas Leads Science Committee Republicans Requesting Hearing on Safely Reopening Schools

Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas and 15 other Republicans on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology say it’s time public schools reopened after being closed over the COVID-19 pandemic.

He and others sent a letter to Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, the Democrat who chairs the committee and requested a hearing on reopening schools safely.

Students are falling behind academically at unprecedented levels, and many that rely on key support services are becoming even more isolated and untended,” said Congressman Lucas. “The science is clear. If local schools implement safe and responsible measures, we can get our children back into the classroom and our families back to a sense of normalcy.”

The letter was in response to a study recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which found that schools can safely reopen, if they do proper prevention and carry out mitigation efforts in place.

“However, there have been conflicting messages from Biden Administration officials, political leaders, and union officials about whether schools should be following the science and prioritizing in-person learning,” stated the letter.

The letter, signed by 16 Republican Committee Members, requested a hearing to provide scientific and factual information about how schools can safely be open during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to consider the research on the detrimental impact on children of prolonged virtual learning.
