Cole says reentering Paris Climate agreement “is a backward step”

Oklahoma Congresswoman Tom Cole says President Biden’s move last week to reenter the U.S. into the Paris Climate Agreement is not only the wrong move, but a step backward for the nation’s long-term energy security.

The Republican 4th District Representative called Biden’s move a disservice to the American people.

Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after President Joe Biden officially reentered the United States into the Paris Climate Agreement.

“Choosing to reenter an agreement without renegotiating its terms or even attempting to involve Congress will lock in inequitable mandates that favor China ahead of our own country,” said Cole in a statement from his office.

He argued the result of rejoining the treaty will weaken the U.S. economy and eliminate vital American jobs, “putting our energy supply at the mercy of foreign countries and adversaries that do not have our best interests at heart.”

Cole said he believes climate change is real and should be addressed, but done in a way that is collaborative with Congress and results in what he called “internationally equitable terms.”

“That is not the path President Biden has chosen to take.”
