Baker Hughes rig count is unchanged in historic freeze

The historic freezing weather that gripped Oklahoma, Texas and other energy-producing states apparently played a major role in leaving this week’s rig count unchanged from a week earlier according to Baker Hughes Co. Oklahoma also was unchanged.

The count stayed at 397 with a decline of one oil rig, leaving 305 oil rigs still in operation and the number of gas-drilling rigs at 92. The past week’s numbers are still 394 below the 791 reported one year ago with a decline of 374 oil rigs and 19 gas rigs.

Canada’s numbers shrank in the past week by four to 172.

Oklahoma’s number of active rigs stayed at 17, far below the 51 reported last year at this time. Texas increased by one to 194 while New Mexico was unchanged at 61. Colorado stayed at 8 rigs while the Red Top Rig Report published by the Independent Oil and Gas Service stated the Kansas numbers continued at 16.

Louisiana saw a drop of one to 47 and North Dakota increased its count by one to 14 rigs. Ohio stayed at 7 while Pennsylvania was unchanged at 18. West Virginia saw no change with a dozen rigs while Wyoming stayed at five rigs.

Oklahoma’s Woodford oil plays still have no reported rig activity, according to Baker Hughes. The D-J Basin stayed at 7 while the Eagle Ford of South Texas continued with 29 rigs.

The Granite Wash of Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle had no rig activity to report. The Haynesville was unchanged at 46 and the Marcellus continued unchanged with 30 rigs. No rig activity was reported in the Mississippian while the Permian Basin increased its count by one to 204.

The Utica stayed at 7 rigs and the Williston rig count grew by one to 14.
