Arkansas pipe maker stunned by Keystone XL cancellation

When President Biden cancelled permits for the Keystone XL pipeline project, it was felt all the way to Little Rock, Arkansas home of Welspun Tubular LLC.

Leadership of the company was disappointed because the firm had added 50 more employees for a workforce of 600 since announcing a contract in August 2020 to provide pipe for the massive project to carry oil from Canada through Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska.

Welspun Tubular is the biggest employer and revenue producer at the Port of Little Rock and COO Rajesh Chokhani is hoping the cancellation won’t result in the loss of jobs.

The Magnolia Banner News reports that state and local officials gathered with executives from Welspun and other private companies on Friday in front of 36-inch radius pipes stacked in long rows within Welspun’s 740-acre facility, to underscore the economic risk to Central Arkansas as a result of the Biden administration’s decision to kill the $8 billion Keystone project, which would carry oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast.
