Tulsa’s Discovery Lab is unveiling a new earth science exhibit made possible in part by the people of Oklahoma Oil and Natural Gas. Through a $25,000 grant from the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board (OERB), the Discovery Lab’s new, original exhibition, Beneath Your Feet: Geology of Oklahoma will allow visitors to explore the geosciences behind how our state’s distinctive landscape was shaped 300 million years ago.
“What makes this exhibit different is that this will be the inaugural exhibition in our new traveling exhibits program. Produced with advisors from the Tulsa Geological Society and the Geophysical Society of Tulsa, the exhibition will bring a hands-on, Discovery Lab museum experience to rural communities throughout Oklahoma,” said Ray Vandiver, Discovery Lab President and CEO. “This exhibit will help students explore geology with a distinct Oklahoma lens and give them a chance to relate to the landscape they see every day in locations that are out of reach for a museum visit.”
The Beneath Your Feet exhibit will be on display for 2021 and will then travel to rural school districts throughout Oklahoma in 2022.
“With funding from the people of Oklahoma Oil & Natural Gas, we are proud to help support educational exhibits that provide the public with a better understanding of our state’s geology,” said OERB Executive Director Mindy Stitt. “Our goal is to spark students’ interest and hopefully encourage them to pursue a career in STEM.”
The OERB is funded by the people of Oklahoma Oil & Natural Gas through a voluntary one-tenth of 1 percent assessment on oil and natural gas production. Since 1993, the agency’s purpose is to conduct environmental restoration of abandoned well sites and to educate Oklahomans about the importance of the petroleum industry.
