Slight increase in US rig activity

Oklahoma’s rig numbers remained the same in the past week while nationally, they increased by three to hit 323 active oil and gas rigs in the country as the coronavirus pandemic continued on its deadly path across the country and the world.

Baker Hughes Co. reported the nation saw an increase of 5 oil rigs to reach 246 while the number of gas rigs dropped by two to 75. The U.S. count is still 476 fewer than the 799 active rigs reported one year ago. The decline includes 417 fewer oil rigs and 58 fewer gas gis.

Oklahoma’s count of 13 compares to 50 active rigs one year earlier. The count in Texas increased by two to reach 149, far below the 400 rigs a year ago.

Colorado’s numbers increased two to reach 7 active rigs. The Red Top Rig Report published by the Independent Oil and Gas Service in Wichita reported the Kansas rig count dropped by three to 17.

Louisiana’s numbers increased one to 40 while North Dakota remained at eleven. Pennsylvania’s count dropped by three to 17 while West Virginia added two to hit 9 rigs. Wyoming lost one rig and had only one operating rig in the past week.

In Ohio, numbers were unchanged at four active rigs.

The numbers reflect only a slight change in the oil and gas drilling activity that plunged as the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world and continues striking the nation and the state of Oklahoma. It means there are still large numbers of rigs in storage and of course, larger numbers of out-of-work oilfield hands.

Of the oil plays, Oklahoma’s Arkoma and Ardmore Woodfords were reported to have no active drilling. Colorado’s D-J Basin saw an increase of two to reach six rigs.

The Mississippian in Oklahoma and southern Kansas still has no reported rig activity, based on the Baker Hughes report.

The Permian Basin count grew by three to reach 164.

The Eagle Ford of South Texas was unchanged at 23. The Haynesville stayed at 40 rigs while the Marcellus declined by two to 25 rigs. The Utica count increased by one to five while the Williston stayed at eleven active rigs.
