Rig count shows growth in Anadarko Basin

The latest rig count numbers from the data analytical firm Enverus shows rig activity was relatively flat over the past week. But the Austin, Texas firm reported rig activity spiked in the Anadarko Basin where five rigs were added last week bringing the total to 23.

Enverus indicated the basin is up six over the past month.

Nationally, the US rig count is 401 which is a 14% increase over the last month but still down 51% compared to a year earlier.

The firm reported rig activity in the Permian Basin increased by one and fell by three in the Eagle Ford of South Texas. Rig activity in the D-J Basin of Colorado dropped by two.

The positive natural gas outlook is likely drawing drillers back to gassier plays, such as Appalachia reported Enverus. In the last month, Appalachian rigs have increased by eight to 39.

Encino Acquisition Partners has added two rigs in the last month and is running three. Interestingly, the company hasn’t run this many rigs since 2015.

Cabot Oil & Gas has returned to a three-rig program after dropping to two from mid-March through the end of November. After dropping to one rig at the end of January, HG Energy has ramped to two. PennEnergy Resources is running two rigs for the first time since 2018.

Haynesville rig activity is back at January 2020 levels of 40 rigs. The play has gradually seen an increase of activity since hitting a trough of 24 rigs in late May and early June. The most active operators are Aethon Energy (eight rigs), Rockcliff Energy (five) and Comstock Resources (five).

Other rig activity reported by Baker Hughes Co. won’t be available until later on Friday.
