New Mexico Democratic Rep. Deb Haaland has picked up more support in a movement to have to become Interior secretary in a Biden administration.
POLITICO reported that more than 50 House Democrats formally backed her in a letter sent this week to President-elect Biden. As OK Energy Today reported, Haaland is being vetted for the position and if she were to be chosen, she would become the first Native American Cabinet secretary in U.S. history.
In urging Biden to pick Rep Haaland, the Democrats wrote, “You can make history by giving Native Americans a seat at the Cabinet table for the first time.”
Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva, who chairs the House Natural Resources Committee led the letter writing campaign after endorsing Haaland earlier in the week in another letter he sent to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Congresswoman Haaland is a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe near Albuquerque, New Mexico and is one of only two Native American women ever elected to Congress.
