Pipeline workers laid off in San Antonio

It doesn’t compare to some of the large numbers of layoffs by some firms, but to the 22 workers losing their jobs at Howard Energy Partners in San Antonio, the loss is every bit as painful.

A statement by CEO Mike Howard didn’t say which positions had been eliminated or where the discharged workers were located. The company declined to provide more details on the employees in question in a follow-up email. Howard Energy still employs more than 300 workers across four states, including Texas, and in Mexico, Mike Howard said reported the San Antonio Business Journal.

“In order to remain a strong and healthy company in San Antonio and beyond, tough decisions have to be made to ensure long-term viability,” Mike Howard said.

The workers who lost their jobs were given severance payments, he said.

Mike Howard blamed the job cuts on falling rig counts and an oilfield shutdown that began in mid-March. The production shut-ins and falling gasoline demand due to Covid-19 lockdowns have rippled across the industry, impacting midstream companies like Howard Energy and leading to smaller second-quarter earnings results for refiners.

The company hopes to return to pre-Covid-19 levels of employment as the industry rebounds, spokeswoman Meggan Morrison of Redbird Communications Group said in a statement.
