Court order will result in increased rail shipments of Bakken crude oil

If and when the Dakota Access crude oil pipeline shuts down under orders of a federal court, will it lead to increased transportation of crude by rail? Will environmentalists regret their opposition to the North Dakota pipeline?

They are big questions that some are raising, and no doubt environmentalists, who voiced opposition in past years to movement of oil by rail because of accidents, fiery deaths and environmental disasters, might wonder if they substituted one energy issue for another.

The Bismarck Tribune explored the issue and reported some experts believe a shutdown will force oil companies to ship another 200,000 barrels a day of Bakken crude by rail. It would amount to the equivalent of nearly three more oil trains leaving the state every day.
