Corporation Commission’s headquarters to remain closed to the public during pandemic

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission voted Tuesday to extend its order keeping the headquarters building closed to the public for another 60 days because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The discussion on the third extension since the start of the coronavirus pandemic led Commission Chairman Todd Hiett to state, “There is no indication when the building will reopen.”

The first order to close the Jim Thorpe building was approved by the commission on March 17, 2020.

Hiett voiced criticism by some who suggested the building would reopen on July 22, something one state attorney used in a Facebook posting to attract possible clients that he might represent.

“We certainly want to make it clear that these orders are for internal operational procedures and to help us do what we have to do to remain nimble and continue to get the people’s business accomplished,” said the chairman. “In no way, shape or form is September 22nd a set date when we will reopen.”

He said the Commission could reopen tomorrow, a week from tomorrow or a month from tomorrow.
