Texan hopes to be top Republican on House Energy Committee

As a member of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee, Oklahoma Republican Rep. Markwayne Mullin might have a new GOP member to look up to in the coming months.

Fellow committee member, U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess of Lewisville, Texas has been quietly running a campaign to become the top Republican on the committee. As the Texas Tribune reported this week, Burgess could even become the chairman of the committee if the 2020 elections go the way of Republicans in the House.

Burgess has long had his eyes on the chairman position. But for now, the open position is the ranking member slot — the designation for the minority party’s committee leader. Should Republicans take back the U.S. House, which is a long shot but not impossible in a turbulent political environment, Burgess would be in contention for the top job.
