NextEra Energy Resources, the world’s largest generator of renewable energy from the wind and the sun, announced a $14,500 donation to assist victims and first responders impacted by the wildfire that destroyed more than 30,000 acres and multiple homes in Beaver County in early March.
Together with its corporate charitable foundation, NextEra Energy Resources provided emergency funds that will directly support the region’s volunteer fire departments and assist families recovering from the loss of property.
NextEra Energy Resources owns and operates several renewable energy projects in Oklahoma, including the Ponderosa Wind Project, which is currently under construction in Beaver County.
“We believe in building strong partnerships and supporting the communities we serve,” said Tricia Hale, director of development for NextEra Energy Resources. “We have seen the devastating effects wildfires have had on families and communities, and think it’s important to help those in need. We also want to help replenish the resources that support our first responders so they can prepare for the next emergency.”
On March 7, a grass fire began in Beaver County which required an evacuation of all residents as fire crews from three states helped battle the fire over a three-day period. Although the town of Beaver was spared, there was damage as several homes were destroyed and the high school football field burned. State and county officials estimate the blaze caused more than $50 million in damages.
“We can’t express how much we appreciate the donation from NextEra Energy Resources and the team at the Ponderosa Wind Project,” said Beaver County Commissioner Kerry Regier. “In Beaver County, we have seven volunteer fire departments operated by 100 dedicated volunteers that provide his or her own personal time when the need arises. While these departments receive some local money, each volunteer group must supplement an operating budget through local fundraising.”
The donation from NextEra will provide some much-needed relief to ensure our volunteers have the safety equipment and the tools needed when they are called upon again.”
The Ponderosa Wind Farm is an innovative project that will feature up to 100 GE wind turbines, capable of generating up to 200 megawatts of clean, renewable energy. The project, which is currently in construction, is scheduled to begin operations by November. Over the next 30 years, the project is expected to provide $40 million in additional county revenue that can enhance local roads, schools and country services.
