Layoff numbers revealed in Tulsa plant shutdown

An estimated 150 workers are losing their jobs with the announced shutdown this week of the Cytec Industrial Materials plant located in Tulsa.

A spokesman for Cytec’s parent company, Solvay based in Belgium confirmed the number in an email to OK Energy Today.

Cytec manufactured composite materials for airplanes made by Boeing and Airbus, but Boeing’s reduction in contracts as a result of the troubled 737 Max affected the Tulsa operation as well as one in the United Kingdom. Both are being closed by Solvay.

In all, 570 workers were laid off as a result of the closing of the two manufacturing plants. Soltay indicated while it had record results in 2019, they were not sufficient to overcome the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
